Pre-Radiation Dental Examination

Our responsibility is to prepare you for your radiation therapy. After being referred by your oncologist, our doctors will thoroughly evaluate each tooth within the radiation field clinically and radiographically to assess the its prognosis and determine whether it presents a potential risk periodontally to your overall health.
If a tooth is considered in poor condition, it may be elected to be removed prior to radiotherapy to prevent future complications. If you wear a removable prosthesis, its fit should be evaluated since radiated tissues can be easily irritated.  We understand the urgency of your cancer treatment and can usually get you an appointment as soon as possible. If you are currently undergoing dental treatment or know of any dental work that needs to be done, we will determine the appropriate sequence. If you don’t have a dentist, we would be more than happy to help.

We routinely fabricated custom fluoride trays with fluoride gel for your teeth to protect them and prevent future decay due to dry mouth conditions. We also provide in depth patient education, consulting and follow-up to make sure your dental health is carefully monitored. Because of the lasting radiation effects, it is important that your dentist know the possible risks and precautions when treating your dental needs. If your dentist has a question or concern, please feel free to contact us for a consultation. We want to make sure you receive the best care during and after your cancer treatment.
